Plant-Based Food – It’s a Growing Trend!

Vegan, Vegetarian or Plant-Based Foods – a growing trend

First, let’s look at a few definitions for those of us who enjoy eating vegetarian or vegan foods:

  • Plant-Based food might be a fruit, a vegetable, or a whole grain, legume or tuber.  Plant-based eating means little or no meat, dairy, eggs or highly refined foods like white sugar or bleached flour.
  • A Vegetarian is a person who eats no meat.
  • A Pescatarian eats no meat but does eat fish.
  • A Vegan is a person who consumes no animal meat plus no animal byproduct like milk or eggs.

You are part of a growing trend

Whether you consider yourself vegetarian, vegan, or just eating healthy, you are part of a growing trend worldwide. In Britain, statistics show the number of vegans has grown by 360% in the last ten years.

Of course, healthy eating has been around for years.  In fact, Aristotle was apparently a vegetarian.  So were Benjamin Franklin and Albert Einstein.  More recently Ellen Degeneres and Paul McCartney land in the vegetarian camp while  Betty White, Carrie Underwood and Miley Cyrus are all said to embrace a vegan diet.

More than one third of consumers globally now say they are open to plant-based products.  And some estimates indicate that as many as one-fifth of all teens do not eat meat.

Today you can find a directory for Plant-Based Doctors and Veggie Date is a vegetarian dating site.  Arizonans won’t be left out – We have our own Vegetarian Food Festival each year.

A 2015 study in the United States shows 70% of millennials say they consume plant-based food a few times a week or more often.  And hot new ideas like spiral veggy “noodles”, the growing popularity of seaweed dishes, and vegan food delivery services to homes and businesses are making plant-based eating more trendy.
